My Ethnography Paper: Introduction

Perhaps,
it was a subconscious anxiety about my grades for this particular assignment
that dragged my gaze towards the Tick mark on the shirt. No words to share in
or take from the grandeur of the image. A flourish; a mere flick of the
metaphorical mechanical wrist. I sauntered towards the black polyester palette
that displayed this piece of art, simultaneously taking in the figure of a
stout, brown-skinned man. Possibly Indian. He frowned an acknowledgement at my
greetings.

Please, could you…I’m working on this project…. the swoosh…your shirt…its black…I
want …Can I take a picture? I…

Find someone else”

Ok. Thank you.”

The Madinat Zayed mall
witnesses a daily influx of all sorts of people. None that day would grace my
camera with the Tick. Solace came in the guise of a second-rate sports shop in
the shopping complex, within which were lined along the walls, a plethora of
sporting equipment, each marked by that single stroke. Soccer balls were
suspended just beyond my reach by metallic projections not far below the
ceiling. Soccer boots were neatly arranged in pairs on shoe racks round about
every inch of the four walls of the shop, creating a clustered central arena,
through which the other shoppers navigated. I stood for a while, taking in the
sight with two natural eyes and a mechanical one. This was a Nike Shop.
