Potential
Homestuck shows the potential of New Media. Homestuck is not a piece that stands alone but intrinsically weaved into its own cotext, as much a product of cyberculture as cyberculture is of projects like Homestuck. More than that there's clear desire for content like this. Kickstarter has shown that 'where there is a will there is a way', there are markets for this type of product and the fans can be closer to the creation of their favorite product now more than ever.
New Media, regardless of its time (from the printing press to Java) democratizes art and in this case storytelling. Now more than ever, anyone can create complex, immersive content with a small learning curve and more importantly, anyone can access it. Homestuck shows that the new forms of story-telling will be created not by a few geniuses but by the collaborative effort of thousands of normal individuals, who found together a common branch in the giant tree that is creativity.
Homestuck shows the way in which New Media will go. Content will be no longer bound by the constraints of big investors but by the ability of the creator to find a motivated fan base. Context and content are now inseparably related, and the tools provided by technology can no longer be ignored. The internet is lo longer a place of distribution, it is now a place for creation.
If you chose not to look at every video, click on every link to you had every right not to. However, I urge you to click on some of those links, to watch the videos and maybe even related videos. Homestuck cannot be understood on one essay, Homestuck can only be understood as part of the context in which it is in, something that cannot be expressed, only experience. So please go forth, experience.
