The Serial Queen -- Shifting Meldodrama from Constative to Performative

In contrast to melodrama we have a group of women stars moving toward the other end of the spectrum to the performative, as for example, Pearl White in Plunder has a couple of ne’er-do-well types that entice her into quicksand.  Here her performance is linked to melodrama, some broad, slow gestures, but also a good bit of understatement given the situation.  Moreover think how the edits work, they lead not to certainty of her rescue, but its unlikelihood, improbability – “1 in a 1000!”
