Selected Lyrics and Monologue Fragments

Astrid Hadad

By Astrid Hadad

Translated by Roselyn Costantino and Lorna Scott

Lyrics:

Corazón Sangrante: Bleeding Heart

Where shall I go?

Where shall I put this bleeding heart

That it won´t hurt so,

That it won´t bleed so,

That it won´t burn me so badly?

I´ll wear it on my chest

Just like the saints do

And then you’ll see

How you’ve hurt me

Madly, madly,

My heart is soaked in chili pepper.

With chili you´ve stewed it,

With lies you´ve crushed it.

My heart anguishes.

It burns.

You´ve tattooed it with your name!

You should have left it pinned to your vest,

Or eaten it.

Anything better than leaving me like Christ

With a bleeding, aching heart!

Where shall I go?

Where shall I put this bleeding heart?

This burning,

Sizzling,

Cringing heart?

This conquered,

Abused,

Smarting,

Blistered,

Pierced,

Wounded,

Ruptured heart?

This screwed heart, wounded, squandered, exhausted, nauseated, negated, kicked, twisted, ground, liquified, toasted, roasted. Destroyed, trampled, humiliated, cheated, stewed, stuffed, crushed, rejected, smashed, abandoned, suffocated, and very manhandled heart.

¡Mata! Dios Perdona/ Kill, God forgives!

Have no fear of the path you walk.

Move steadily on.

So what if people talk about you!

If you see students marching for peace,

kill them quick, they´re troublemakers!

Kill! God forgives.

Kill! God forgives.

Once a confessor

to a great Conquistador said:

“Kill them Indians, it´s just a game.

All´s forgiven once you confess.”

In the name of Justice, just kill them all!

Impunity for all!

Kill, God forgives!

Have no fear of the path you walk.

Move steadily on.

So what if people talk about you!

If its in your neighbor´s house

you want to live,

blow his head off with no regrets,

the United Nations has paved the road.

Just kill! God forgives,

Just kill! God forgives.

La Tequillera: The Tequila Lady

How you beat me last night!

With or without you

I have no peace.

With you because you’re killing me,

Without you, because I am dying.

How you beat me last night,

How I need you still…

Monologue fragments from various shows.

[Provided by Hadad. Not associated with any one show, repeated in various]

I. “The song I just sang is surrealist. In Mexico, surrealism is almost a way of governing. For those who don´t know what surrealism is and think it’s a stomach disorder, I´m going to describe it. According to the dictionary: An effort to move beyond the real by way of the imaginary and the irrational. An artistic movement that seeks the expression of pure thought to the exclusion of all logic and all moral and aesthetic worry. A Mexican political movement, lacking any morality, ethics or aesthetics, which seeks to convince us that the reality we live is a product of our imagination.”

II. “Everyone thinks that sinning is easy, but that´s not true. Sometimes you can´t even find anyone to do it with. Often, even though we want to we can´t sin because we share the moon´s destiny...everyone admires us, everyone sings to us, the dream of us, but nobody touches us and if they do touch us, they do it badly. Aye, a woman with the destiny of the moon, so generous and delicious, and no one enjoys her.”

III. “I´m always confused, I don´t know if I´m coming or going, although I always try to be coming and to come well, of course. I don´t know if I´m good or bad because according to the good ones, I´m bad, and to the bad ones, I´m worse.”

IV. “I am so many women in one, and sometimes, one of so many.

The only thing for sure is that I am a woman, beautiful, smart and immodest.”
