Critical Coordinates

"Critical Coordinates" explores the use of mapping devices and techniques as empowering methodologies. In this section we will see how artists and cultural agents alter the function of mobile location devices and codified maps, transforming them from abstract tools to political lenses. In this way, artists and activists add an expressive layer to the functional uses of mobile location devices and traditional maps.

If both old and new forms of representing space respond to the users' need to move between point A and point B in the most efficient way possible, experimental uses of locative media and cartographic tools put bodies on the map at the crossroads of physical landscapes, ideological representations, and symbolic interrogations. Through the tactical uses of media practices, these pieces zoom in and out of zones of conflict such as national borders, spaces of transnational exploitation, and societies of control. In this movement between panoramic and close-up views, these cultural practices lay the ground for a critical reclaiming of contested spaces defined by ideologies of exclusion and marginalization.
