Blue Prints: Proposing "Mapping Ulysses"

Project Description

I propose (surprise!) to make a map of James Joyce’s Ulysses for my 507 project.  The project I’m proposing is a prototype, or beta version, of a larger, more detailed map of the novel I plan to build for my Master’s project. To date, I’ve provisionally mapped the “Lestrygonians” episode from the novel in a KML file exportable to Google Maps or Google Earth, appended with bubbles that link contemporary photographs to portions of the text. Though this trail run is limited to Bloom’s direct itinerary through the heart of Dublin to the National Library of Ireland on Kildare street (Sráid Chill Dara), I hope to annotate the map with sociopolitical information pertinent to, and evoked by, the novel. Ideally, too, I see the 507 project as a trail run to work out an appropriate model and projected workflow for the larger map I will attempt to create in the near future.
