Valley Beth Shalom: Mizrahi Prayer

Many Iranian Jews do not participate in American synagogues during the High Holidays because they want to hear their own melodies. Valley Beth Shalom sees itself as standing out from other American temples, because it has incorporated Mizrahi melodies and prayer during High Holidays. They do this to attract more Iranian Jews. Valley Beth Shalom has an Iranian service on High Holidays, where an Iraqi cantor will come from Israel and pray with the congregation, leading the service. The incorporation of Mizrahi prayer has been successful: there are more than 300 Iranian Jews who come to Valley Beth Shalom during High Holidays.

During the course of the year, Valley Beth Shalom takes various initiatives to celebrate Persian culture both religiously and culturally, because they want the new generation of Iranian Jewish kids to feel attached to their culture and very proud of their identity. Valley Beth Shalom believes it is important for Iranian Jews to stay connected to their Iranian Jewish Culture.
