The Neuromuscular Disease Foundation: Hereditary Inclusion Body Myopathy (HIBM)

What is HIBM?
HIBM is a disease that affects the muscles of the human body. The disease causes the muscles to gradually deteriorate and waste away, eventually leading to a complete loss of muscle function in those who are affected. As tragic and harmful HIBM is to the human body, it is not life threatening, meaning individuals who have the disease can live a long life. The disease onset is not sudden; it is a gradual process.

What are the symptoms?
The symptoms of the disease typically start between the ages of 25 and 35.They are usually mild at first. Early symptoms include difficulty lifting the foot while walking. Symptoms then begin to moderately worsen; sufferers soon become unable to stand steadily and fall frequently. In the final stages of the disease, patients experience weakness in the hand muscles, and also lose strength in the neck muscles; the shoulders will become stiff and hard to move.

Does the disease harm any other parts of the body?
The disease does not harm internal bodily functions; the brain, heart, and digestive system function completely normally.
