Sinai Temple Men's Club: David Matloob - From Member to President

David’s path to becoming a Men’s Club member, and ultimately the president of the organization, was unique. There are several factors that influenced his decision to join an Ashkenazi synagogue, particularly Sinai Temple. Specifically, the Ashkenazi-style music, sermon, and friendly community appealed to him, and he was further drawn to Sinai as a direct result of his father’s passing. David explained that losing his father initially drew him to becoming an active member of the temple when he was warmly welcomed by several of the temple’s members to partake in the reciting of the “Mourner's Kaddish.” Once a member, David took on key responsibilities to assist the former club president at the time, essentially inspiring him to become the first Iranian president of the Sinai Temple Men’s Club.

In a personal message written in the 2002 edition of the Sinai Temple Men’s club newsletter, David Matloob explains the following story on what inspired him to become president of the Men’s club. Mr. Maltoob’s father, Isaac Matloob, left his position as a teacher at a prestigious Christian school in Iran to become the principal of a new Jewish school, Korossh, at a much lower salary. Isaac Matloob believed it was his responsibility, as one of the few university-educated Jewish men in his community, to take on the position of principal and to pass on his education to the younger members of his community. By assuming his role as president of Sinai Temple Men’s club, David Matloob was hoping to follow in his father’s footsteps and to provide the same level of commitment to his Jewish community.
