Mastaneh Moghadam: DV: A “norm” in Iranian Families

As a result of the lectures and classes eventually put on by Jewish Family Services with the help of data collected by Mastaneh, the Iranian community was given the opportunity to learn that domestic violence is a real problem. This is an issue that transcends religion, economic status, years since resettlement, or anything of that sort. In fact, domestic violence runs deep within some Iranian families. Women would often approach Mastaneh after her talks and wonder whether her definition of DV was simply referring to marriage. For these women, the pattern of abuse, control, and violence that generations before them and after them had and would experience was incredibly normalized within the family.
