Jasmine Shamolian: The Power of Community

Although Jasmine Shamolian took a rather unconventional professional route for a Persian Jewish woman, she is grateful for the guidance and support she has received from the Persian Jewish community. Jasmine’s family were among her strongest supporters. Even though they were a little wary of her unconventional professional path, as most Persian Jewish families would be, her family actually provided her with her most important mentors. Jasmine’s older sister and sister-in-law provided immense support and guidance. Jasmine’s sister works with a few non-profit organizations, one of which is Chaya, a Jewish women’s empowerment group. Her sister has guided her in achieving both her personal and professional goals. According to Jasmine, her sister was also the reason she decided to work with the Persian Jewish community. Jasmine was mentored by her sister-in-law, who also has a Masters in Social Work. She also received guidance from others in the Persian Jewish community in Los Angeles, including her college professor Saba Soomekh and peers who have chosen careers in the social and public sector.

Jasmine’s connection to the Persian Jewish community also influenced her choice to work for Paul Koretz. Koretz is the council member overseeing Encino, Westwood, and Beverly Hills, which are all cities with a high population of Persian Jews. Jasmine’s Persian Jewish identity constituted a key reason she was hired to work under Paul Koretz. Jasmine believes it is important to have someone in the office who is able to connect with both Persian and Jewish constituents.

Jasmine also strives to be a positive model for Persian Jewish girls. Although the Persian Jewish community can sometimes be skeptical when children seek unconventional careers, Jasmine believes it is important to look at the multiple positive advantages offered by the tight-knit Persian Jewish community in Los Angeles. Jasmine advises other Persian Jewish young women who want to go into politics to step up and voice their opinions. She also believes that they should be connected to their representatives and even work with peers because they are stronger together. Jasmine is very proud to be Persian and Jewish and strives to continue to influence her community just as her community has influenced her.
