Iranian Jewish Women's Organization of Southern California: The Beginning of the IWJO of Southern California
The Iranian Jewish Women’s Organization of Southern California (IJWO) was founded the summer of 1976 by a group of Iranian women in Los Angeles, California. The IJWO intended to preserve bonds with their Jewish and Iranian culture in addition to playing a charitable, social and cultural role. The IJWO was created in order to combat the gender discrimination faced by Iranian Jewish women. They endeavor to protect the dual identity of the Iranian Jewish community in Los Angeles. They are also committed to recognizing the impact and role of Iranian Jewish women in society. Throughout Iranian history, women have been seen solely as mothers and homemakers; the organization, therefore, has fought to break down norms for Iranian women, change their image and elevate their status throughout the community. They are interested in progress and shaping present-day society.
One of the many goals of the organization is to empower women by giving them the basic tools needed to support themselves. They inspire women to become educated, attain a high status career, and alter the perception of Iranian women in society. The Iranian Jewish Women’s Organization of Southern California aims to enhance society through the promotion of Iranian Jewish heritage and benefit society at large. The organization hosts galas with the dual purpose of raising money for charitable causes, and creating unity within the community.
