Arden-Mayfair, Inc.

Gelson’s exceptional supermarkets drew the attention of of Arden-Mayfair, Inc., the Los Angeles supermarket and dairy products firm who had been successful since the 1920s. In 1966, Arden-Mayfair acquired the two supermarkets in the San Fernando Valley while developing plans to build a 40,000 square foot store in North Hollywood under the Gelson name.

The North Hollywood market on Laurel Canyon Blvd and Riverside Dr. opened in July, 1966. Both brothers remained with the markets following the buyout and spearheaded further expansion Eugene until his death in 1980 and Bernard until his retirement in 1988. Although none of the Gelson family continued in the grocery business, Gelson's remains a household name and has become a recognizable symbol of quality and exceptional service. 

Today, there are 18 locations across the Southland ranging from Santa Barbara to Dana Point.
