Cha ChaanTeng: A Tale of Food and Its City

Where does Cha Chaan Teng come from?

Half a century ago in colonial Hong Kong, Cha Chaan Teng was developed from Bing Suut(冰室).
At that time, while most western restaurants were either not affordable or not available for native Hong Kong people, the local Hong Kongers started to have their own "westen style" food place. First came Bing  Suut, which usually only sold snacks like toast and drinks;then more food were incorporated into the menu. The snack stores developed into a place people can sit down and eat. That's Cha Chaan Teng.
Now Cha Chaan Teng is all over Hong Kong.
