“In my rural high...”

In my rural high school, there were not many electives. By default, girls were assigned to home economics and boys were assigned to shop class. There were one or two people each year who asked to switch, but they were teased and most people didn't want to step outside the norm.

In Iranian schools we had to cover our hairs and body because we were girls, we were taught how to knit and sew. boys were taught how to carpenter and use a gun.

At age 11, I moved from rural New Mexico to the suburbs of New York City. My hand-me-downs when contrasted with the preppy new(er) clothes of my classmates taught me a quick and stinging lesson on class issues.
