In 5th grade, at the start of penmanship class for girls, S. asked Miss W. why we couldn't go out and play, like the boys did. Miss W. answered: "If you want to be a boy, you can leave now." That shut all of us girls up, and we already knew better: girls had to be girls and to question social gendering was a risk.--Experience of a black girl in all-black private school in Brooklyn, circa 1974
