Escaped Youths, Nabbed in Bergen, Back in Annandale

(UNDATED) Four youths who escaped from Annandale Reformatory on Friday night, one a Patersonian, were back in that institution today, all because they obtained a tank full of gasoline at a Lodi service station without paying for it for the stolen car in which they were riding.

State Troopers Marting J. Donohue and Daniel Fonzi, of the Ramsey Barracks, informed by a teletype message that the quartet was headed along Route 17, caught the four at Route 17 and Linwood Ave. in Paramus mid-morning yesterday. They offered no resistance and were taken to the Bergen County Jail after being fed hamburgers and coffee by Donohue which they said was the first food they bad received since they escaped. Reformatory officials, notified of the capture of the quartet, took the prisoners back to Annandale early last evening.

The four were tattered, dirty and hungry when the two troopers took them into custody. They had hid in the woods until Saturday when they stole a 1946 sedan in North Bergen and immediately headed for Bergen County in their Reformatory garbs. Running low on gasoline in Lodi they pulled up at the Cress Esso station, Route 6, and obtaining the tank full of fuel, drove off without paying. Police were notified by the attendant at the service station and the teletype alarm sounded.

Picked up eight minutes later riding in the stolen machine, the youths readily admitted their identity. They are: James Ullven, 20, of Saugus, Mass, convicted of armed holdup and robbery; Roy (Mickey) Corby, 20, of (235 47th St.) Union City; Thomas Wingate, 19, of (221 West Broadway) Paterson; and Chester Farrell, 20, of (165 Eighth St.) Jersey City. The last three were convicted of burglary.

State Police filed additional charges of escape and larceny of an automobile against the quartet yesterday.

Police said the youths escaped from the reformatory by leaping from a third floor window after overpowering a guard and locking him in a closet. A fifth youth broke his leg in the jump and was left behind by the others.
