Exú

Exú, also knowns as Elegba, Eshu, Tata Eleggua, Legba, Esu is the trickster god in the pantheon of Orishas in Candomble. With roots in Yuruba, he can be found in Candomble, Santaria, and other religions that have grown out of African tradition. In all of these incarnations, he is the trickster.

Exu lives in the crossroads between the physical and metaphysical worlds. He is the messenger and the gatekeeper between these realms. Like all tricksters, he will challenge you, present opportunities for growth and point out paths not seen by all. One could see these challenges as bad as they do take us out of our comfort zone, but the trickster is sacred and necessary.

He dwells in liminal space. It is the space of the unknown, daring to take path unseen and unknown; holding space for the infinite possibility outside of the status quo. In this space we find the interconnectedness of all living beings. "But there is a very sacred function for all tricksters in all traditional cultures. That function is to bring to each one of us the truth that we are all interconnected and inter-related. It is the eternal truth that no one can be totally self-reliant. The role of the trickster is to let those who believe that all their problems are covered, that they are a tough guy and will never cry, know that this self-perception may not be true. His goal behind his tricks is to create an awareness of inter-relatedness" (Swarthmore)
