20 “black lesbian feminist”

Off Our Backs' detailed report of the conference by Carol Anne Douglas and Brooke described "Camille Bristow and Bonnie Johnson" as "Black lesbian feminists," and it suddenly occurs to me that no, Johnson has not, in either the Conversation or "Both And" applied that label to herself.

In "Black Women on Black Women Writers," Johnson does refer to herself as "a black feminist" and in "Both And" Johnson stated "My identification has always been with women."  She ends the interview with "some people might call it inter-racial feminist cooperation, but let's just call it women loving women."

However, in the section of "Black Women on Black Women Writers" when the women are discussing sexuality, Johnson makes few remarks.  In the context of discussing Alice Walker's work and her idea that "lesbian is not a suitable term for black women who are in to woman-bonding," Johnson argued that the need to find new terms for identities comes from a desire "to say no to whatever images come to mind in those words, from that history."  When some of the other women criticized Walker, Johnson defended Walker's right to "define [her] reality." Refering to a similar situation, writing historically about women who used the patriarchal form of address such as Mrs. Booker T Washington, Johnson again asserted "That was her definition for herself.  The definiton needs to be brought to light, acknowledged in a very truthful manner. And then we go on to interpret it."

OOB leaves me with one last trace.
