Understory 2017: An Annual Anthology of Achievement

From the Student Editors and Faculty

From the Student Editors:

Understory has consistently been an opportunity for students to share their creativity. This edition does that, and more. We, the editorial team, have been thrilled to highlight student achievement, both on the creative and now on the scholarly side as well, and have been blown away by the quality of the content submitted. The creative writing was selected via a blind judging process by the student editors, and Understory has provided us an opportunity to work closely with faculty and gain professional experience in editing and design. Everything in this anthology from its cover to its contents has been done by a student here at the University of Alaska Anchorage—by the students, for the students.

From the Faculty Advisors and Project Liaisons:

Guided by the mission and strategic plan of the Department of English, this edition of Understory: An Annual Anthology of Achievement showcases excellent undergraduate research in English Studies—scholarship and creative works—across all of the disciplinary focus areas in our department. That is a departure from past editions of Understory that focused only on student work emerging from the department's minor in Creative Writing. We designed this model to increase the quality and breadth of the works presented, to ensure student hands-on learning, and to create the potential to accommodate the full range of excellent multi-modal work our students produce. Finally, the model is sustainable. It represents an approximately 90% reduction in the cost from prior versions, and processes have been developed to enable this to continue into the future.
