Portrayal of Women in STEM in prime time TV

Amy Farrah Fowler.

Amy Farrah Fowler is first prospected on the show, the Big Bang Theory, as a potential partner for Sheldon. Sheldon's friends find Amy on an online dating website. She too had avoided romantic relationships like Sheldon and only joined the online dating site as a way to get her mother off of her back. She only goes on dates once a year so she can access her mother's George Foreman grill.
As her relationship with Sheldon develops, she comes up with a 5 year plan to marry him. She becomes the obsessive girlfriend and tries to push her relationship with Sheldon further and further each episode.
She is rarely talked out in her professional aspect of her character. She is a neuroscience with a PhD in neurobiology from Harvard.. The show main ploy with he is to showcase a less human interaction deficient Sheldon and show how her character develops as her relationship goes through trials and tribulations. Her low self esteem is a huge part of her appearances and how she interacts with Sheldon and the other girls on the show. There is little to no discussion of her work.
