Split Screen in the Age of Digital Comics

Spatial montage is seeing a lot of use today as well, though in different ways.

Ivan Reitman’s 2014 film Draft Day takes an approach to split screen that could be said to be influenced by digital comics. The transitions between panels in the film almost feel momentum-scrolled, as if they exist side by side in a cinematic version of the infinite canvas. One almost gets the sense that it’s possible to reach out and swipe back to the previous panel.
