  2. General overview of major events involving the Ottoman Empire and Europe prior and during the First World War.
  3. Overview of the Middle East's involvement in WWI from the University of Arizona's Center for Middle Eastern Studies.
  4. A map created by the Royal Geographical Society in 1920 and presented by the Carolina Center for the Study of the Middle East and Muslim Civilizations illustrates what was regarded just after the war's end as "the Middle East."  The region includes Turkey, and describes the Middle East as "lands from the Bosphorus to the eastern frontiers of India".
Today, Turkey is still thought of as part of the Middle East in some contexts. The land are that is now considered "The Middle East" has significantly grown as shown by the map provided by the Middle East Studies Association. You can note the changes in perceptions of the region's boundaries shift over time  here.
