Welcome to FMMC 104: Television and American Culture

This course explores American life in the last six decades through an analysis of our central medium: television. We will consider
  • The economics of the television industry
  • TV form, narrative, & genres
  • TV’s representations of gender, sexuality, & race
  • TV’s role in everyday life
  • TV’s technological and social impacts
  • TV’s place in digital culture
  • TV's role within America’s public sphere
We will screen a wide range of television from the 1950s to the present. We will also focus on HBO’s True Detective to examine television as an ongoing process of cultural and industrial storytelling. You'll also have the opportunity to explore your own voice as a television & media critic.
