Agesilaos was almost forty years old when he became king, unlike other kings had passed through the Agoge, and would go on to rule Sparta for forty years during which time Sparta was the hegemon of the Greek city-states. The political and military world was much different than in the time of Leonidas and even Brasidas; how, then, did Agesilaos respond?
