Day 2 Nicola

This morning a trio of obnoxious alarms, belonging to myself, and my two roommates, Angie and Delaney, woke me up. I immediately jumped out of bed and turned them off. My roommates and I were a little tired as we didn’t get enough sleep the night before because we had to wait for the hotel staff to figure out how to fix our door so that it would close and lock. We quickly got dressed and began our walk to practice, which was just conveniently located just a block away from out hotel, at the University of Miami's boathouse. Stepping out of the hotel I realized that it wasn’t as warm as I had hoped it to be and I regretted not packing more long sleeve shirts. It was cold, rainy and windy. Gerry informed us that we would be having a long morning practice just in case we couldn’t get in an afternoon practice. Practice started out with a long warm up and drills. After the warm up we started the main work out which was 12 minutes, 10 minutes, 12 minutes with a few minutes rest in between. 12-10-12 is an AT work out with rate changes. While rowing we dodged a few bridges and other crews but saw no manatees sadly. After completing the work out we headed back to the docks and on to a beach blast workout!

The beach blast workout was a circuit with medicine balls, body weight exercises and running. I thought it would be a good idea to do the work out without shoes but after running from the medicine ball to the arm band I immediately regretted that decision. The sand was gritty and hurt to run on but it was a lesson learned for next time! Finally the 30 minute beach blast work out was over and we could go get lunch. My teammates and I then went to the grocery store to stock up on food for the week. When we got back from the grocery store I went to the front desk to get a room change for a room that actually locked. The hotel staff was very happy to change my room and worked hard to accommodate us. Delaney, Angie and I moved our belongings up 3 floors. Our new room is a definite upgrade with a locking door, a toaster, and hand soap! We got settled in and headed to the afternoon practice.

The afternoon was more of a technical row with a coach with each boat. Part of the practice we rowed by pairs and got some individual coaching which was very beneficial for me. It was a long row and I was happy to get back on the dock after putting miles in on the water. Back in the hotel room we cooked dinner, did some light reading and went to bed in preparation of day 3!
