Sami Indigeneity in Sweden : A Struggle for Rights and Recognition

About

My name is Camilla Samuelsson and I am a rising sophomore majoring in International Affairs and Anthropology & Sociology at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania. I am from Palo Alto, California, but was raised in Swedish and Peruvian households. I have always been interested in how people form their identities and how they are perceived by others. I am often asked about my heritage, frequently questioned about how much I identify with one culture or the other. I determined that cultural identities depend on the individual: they are fluid, not concrete, and extend over many types of life experiences . My research is motivated by the urge to continue discourse on indigenous rights and identities. As a Swedish citizen who calls Stockholm, Sweden one of my many homes, I developed curiosity about the Swedish Sami community because it is either left unrecognized and under discussed, or presented as a tourist attraction and fantasized group of people. I wished to learn more and to understand how these definitions and identities formed, in order to continue raising awareness and promoting understanding.
