Introduction

This passage, pages 94-96 of The Medium Is the Massage, encapsulates the challenges of reading the book. In fact, in McLuhan, or Modernism in Reverse, Professor Glenn Willmott argues that The Medium Is the Massage is often undecipherable, and points specifically to the juxtaposition of the Dance of the Dead on pages 94-95 with that of the nude cellist on page 96 as evidence of just how hard it is to make sense of the book.

Despite what Professor Wilmott argues, The Medium Is the Massage is understandable, assuming one understands that the book embraces the coolness of electronic media even while existing in the usually hot medium of print: that is, McLuhan and Fiore expect us to get involved, participate in the making of meaning, and do some work. So, let's get started.
