Puerto Rico's libraries, archives and museums road to recovery: A timeline of events after Hurricane Maria

The Annual Conference of the Association of Caribbean University, Research and Institutional Libraries celebrated in República Dominicana, dedicated a solidarity afternoon to expose challenges and recovery efforts performed around the Caribbean, The case of Puerto Rico was presented by Hilda Teresa Ayala-González in a white paper. Also, members of ACURIL highlighted their donation campaign and mediathon efforts from December 2017. Soraya Serra, Registrar at the Museo de Arte de Ponce, was invited by the Smithsonian Institution to provide training in emergency response to the US Virgin Islands and Ramón Laureano from el Centro de Estudios Avanzados de Puerto Rico y el Caribe presented the impact of the hurricane on Caribbean educational and heritage sites at the Association of Caribbean Historians Annual meeting in Barbados. 
 
A news release from the American Library Association informs of the 20 grants awarded to institutions affected by the hurricane in the Caribbean (13 to Puerto Rico), and the Society of American Archivist also publishes more awards. Due to the extent of damages and the slow recovery of cultural institutions Puerto Rico is listed amongst “America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places”. Miriam Centeno, Collections Care Coordinator at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign, returns to Puerto Rico this time to aid the University of Puerto Rico in Humacao with specialized training in collection salvage, and more efforts by Sujei Lugo to bring books to Puerto Rico are highlighted on the news.
