Most students pray to Tenjin, or use his omamori, for success on their college entrance exams. Students use gōkaku omamori, sometimes coming in the form of blessed pencils, to pray for success in education and good fortune. In particular, these omamori can be obtained at Kitano Tenmangū Shrine in Kyoto or Tenmangū Shrine near Fukuoka in Kyushu. For many, omamori provide the “[r]eligious assurance needed to withstand moral and psychological uncertainties and anxieties in everyday life” (Swanger 249). These amulets provide the ability to focus on the immediate with a feeling of support and a peaceful conscience.
