Pennsylvania Anthracite Coal Miners: Self-Representation and Memorialization

Map

The purpose of this map is to view the monuments geographically throughout the different anthracite regions (Northern, Middle, and Southern). The base layer map is a “terrain” map that shows the depressions of the anthracite region.

It is important to spatially recognize the monuments because there are new assertions and questions that can arise. Although this is not an exhaustive list of all the monuments, there is a larger concentration of monuments in the northern anthracite region. Also, there are almost no monuments in the upper middle region.

A next map layer to add would be to identify if there is any correlation with the concentration of active mines and number of monuments.

For this map, I chose to use Google Maps: My Maps function. This map is mutable and can be enhanced with new map layers. The map also allows the reader to interact differently with the metadata and and gather the coordinates of the monument. Thus, the reader can link out to Google Maps and view the directions in order to visit the monuments for themself.
