"madison sat there alone, staring intensely into the nothing, slightly confused, and some what comforted by the memory that he was not always alone."

"madison sat there alone..." is a short film I created exploring representations of memory in cinema, as well as literature.  In this film there are many indicators of the past. I used the 8mm and magnetic tape recordings as a signifier to a time period before the characters' present. These warmer-toned film sequences become a universal history for the three current characters in Outpost. Though it is through the lens of Madison's memories, it represents a chronological starting point for Abbie, Beth, and Madison. Abbie, Beth, and Madison are the three protagonists in a parallel narrative exploring queerness in the context of a post-apocalyptic survivalist situation. This film showcases elements and architecture which are no longer a part of their present lives. Throughout all of the short films planetary bodies become the constant in the characters' lives. The Moon, Sun, and Mars become silent observers. From the perspective on Earth they are unchanging and universal. The destruction showcased in this short film has no cause,  reason nor source. By leaving out the source (omitting it from Madison's memory) it becomes a truth that Madison, Abbie, and Beth must live with. Looking to the Science Fiction genre, memory plays a key role in the ability for the reader to better understand circumstances and obstacles represented as the story's "present" time. Gattaca is a great example of this technique in cinema. The film views the past through the lens of omnipresent Point-Of-View memory to reveal the turmoil involved in his parents' choices regarding the main character's birth and genes. This sequence allows the viewer insight and information that the main character drew through empirical experience. Just as Gattaca uses omnipresent POV memory to illustrate the recollections of the main character, Madison's past is represented by a combination of direct memory and omnipresent memory.
