Journeying A Thousand Miles

by Jonathan Kroll

“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Lau Tzu’s insight, written in the Tau Te Ching expresses wisdom on many levels. Literally, if we desire to travel from this place to another, beginning with a single step is necessary. Metaphorically, if our goal is to learn something new or develop a certain skill, beginning in this moment—in the here and now—places us on the path towards success. This journey though, can rarely be accomplished without the (healthy) challenge and support of others. During literal travels and symbolic passages, mentors provide questions and tests as well as the inspiration, validation, and resources to successfully journey thousands of miles.
