Motherhood in Alice and Wonderland and The Junglebook

Nature as a Mother

In both stories there is one more character that we do not immediately see. The jungle and wonderland is a character and a mother figure too. In The Jungle Book, the jungle protects Mowgli and adapts to force the animals to work together. The drought forces all the animals to come together and get along. The jungle teaches Mowgli the lessons that he needs to survive and beat the tiger. The jungle teaches Mowgli the life lessons that most mothers guide their child through so they can grow up. In Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Wonderland does the same as the jungle and teaches Alice life lessons that she needs to grow up. Both stories are coming of age stories and these natural character help the main character leave adolescence.
