From violations of academic freedom and the cutting of departments and programs, to the chilling surveillance of research and the policing of campus protest, the values of accessible education in the public interest are under attack. With this map the American Studies Association hopes to call attention to these broad assaults on higher education and show that far from being isolated incidents, they are part of larger trends with potentially devastating consequences. While not exhaustive, our map still shows why things have to change, highlighting troubling patterns that demand our attention as scholars, teachers, administrators, and activists.
