Makoko 2035: An Encyclopedia

Tourism

Tourism: Makoko in 2036 is considered "The Venice of Africa." Tourists from all over the world flock to the city to experience a full immersion in the life of the community and to enjoy the Makokoan life. The local authorities have developed various programs of immersion: introduction to ancestral customs, presentations on the origins of the city, visits to several restaurants to savor their food and drinks, and performances by the local artists. They are currently looking to invest in their next big project: the Makoko Hotel.

A group of entrepreneurs and graduates of the Floating School have developed different activities for tourists. On of these is the Floating Immersive Restaurant, which is a start-up of the Trade School. The restaurant was made possible thanks to one of our graduates who won the Seed Capital for funding and the rest was thanks to "crowdsourcing” investment. The graduates themselves manage the business and the services. Other activities in the restaurant include events put on by Lagos Companies, classes for the community, the most famous of which is called: "Cooking for survival." The restaurant also has a tourist aspect, where the guests are immersed in the creative processes of the Chef and his team, transporting them to a new and surprising reality. The restaurant can fit 20 people and offers a great variety of fish. The kids of the Floating School of Arts plays their typical instruments live and the represent the Yoruban deities for the guest.

The Floating Theater is located in the same floating structure of the Restaurant. Here Nollywood movies are made big and many local artists have been discovered while performing in one of the many events and performances organized here.

Services: Transportation is another area developed for tourism. Makoko is famous for their boat tours which take visitors through the inmost areas of the lagoon.
