Leadership and Community

The city has their leaders and the community approves and respect them. There are not elected democratically. They have the role because of their family heritage. Traditionally Egun and Yoruba leaders are both at the same level to make decisions.  They have their own space for meetings, the Community House, located in the center of Makoko. Some of the leaders are based in Lagos.  The neighborhood is a strong community where people look out for one another

a- Timothy Hunkpoyanwa, was one of them, for family heritage. But after he was killed during the Demolition in 2012, Noah, his brother continues the commitment. 

b- Pa Yetunde, “the Chief”: he is the religious and a natural leader in the community. He represents the Yoruba people. He is the one, with Noah, who thinks the political ideas. He is the oldest, with 80 years. Respected and recognized by all the Makokoans.
 
c- Arigbabu Irikefe is a community leader in Makoko, he represent the Egun people. 

d- Sulayman Afose, is a photojournalist, and he is the next young leader elected for the authorities to represent his generation. He developed an interest in photography after he attended a photo workshop in Makoko "Macktown” in Lagos State. 
 
e- Augustina Suraju, a journalist in Lagos, she works to raise awareness and recruit Makokoans for the Resistance Movement.
 
f- Dinma Nwanye-Ajanaku. Volunteer at Amnesty International, Nigeria.
Previous: Social and Economic Rights Action Center (SERAC), she is an activist and works expanding Makoko´s network in the world.
