Makoko 2035: An Encyclopedia

Electronic Music

Electronic music in Makoko grew out the hacker and maker spaces that spread in the wake of the first wave of digitally literate students from the Floating School. Throughout the 2010's and 20's, Western European electronica and popular American flavors of Hip Hop had a major influence on Nigeria's musical tastes, production, and consumption. This was partly out of a desire to break with the influences of 1960s and 70s Afro Pop and Highlife music, and partly out of a desire on the part of Nigerians to participate more intimately in global culture. For the musicians of Makoko, however, this trend was seen as an abandonment of indigenous rhythms, melodies, and themes. They combined their love of hardware hacking, experimental music, and the rhythms of their native music to form a hybrid music practice that incorporates performance, traditional instruments, synthesizers, wearable electronics, and dance.
