Introduction
What can we learn from listening to literary texts describing a machine that, "más cuidadoso que el oído del enamorado," as one author characterized it eight years after its invention, "guarda la voz"? Did the introduction of the phonograph, with its ability to write and later read "fantásticos zig-zags de la palabra," exert any detectable influence on the way literature was either conceived or created? This project, focused on the Spanish-speaking world in the decades following the introduction in 1877 of the first device capable of both recording and reproducing sound, investigates these questions through a presentation of sonic, textual, and visual materials.
