Project Thesis
There are underlying connotations associated with every instrument. Women often conformed to these connotations, but daring women felt encouraged and inspired to play jazz despite the social and racial constructions of the time. Through our analysis of different artists and the instruments they played, we hope to grasp a better understanding of the different artists' experience with jazz. The instruments we have decided to evaluate include vocals, saxophones, piano, drum and guitars. We suspect that each artist playing her respective instrument will have a different experience with jazz from other artists of different instruments and other artists playing the same instrument but of a different race.
