Course Requirements

In addition to the weekly reading and annotation assignments listed in the schedule, coursework consists of the individual and collaborative digital projects described below.  

Final course grades will be calculated as follows: 

50%- Scalar portfolio
20%- Practicum
10%- Hypothes.is annotations
10%- Zotero and Evernote contributions
10%- Class participation

Prompts and Deadlines

Jan 23

Locate and carry out a formal academic review of a digital humanities project related to your research interests that is not listed on the  "Resources" page. For tips on how to conduct and structure your review read The Public Historian's Digital Project Review Guidelines and consult reviews that have been published in the journal. Post the review to your "Project Review" page in our Scalar  workbook and be prepared to present your selected project to the class.

Jan 30

Locate and carry out a formal academic review of a DH tool from the DiRT directory that is not listed on the "Resources" page. For tips on how to conduct and structure your review consult the directory's Assignment-in-a-box. Post the review to your "Tool Review" page of our Scalar workbook and be prepared to present your selected tool to the class.

Feb 6​

Select four online bios of "successful" academics or professionals in your field. After you have made your selections, create a new page in our Scalar workbook titled "Student's Name + Bio Analysis." On the page embed and/or include links to your selections and discuss what they tell us about the academic or professional bio as a form. For a list of additional questions to consider go here. Once you have completed your "Bio Analysis" page, follow the instructions on the "Assignment" page of the workbook to make sure that it shows up in the contents of your "Portfolio" and the "Bio Analysis" pages. Then, using the insights you have gained from the readings and bio analysis exercise, construct an academic and/or professional bio for your "Portfolio" page of our Scalar workbook. 

Feb 20

As a class, create a group Zotero library and shared Evernote notebook titled "Practicum." Use the library and notebook to begin to collect, organize, and discuss research materials for our final project on the history of Arkansas State University. Since we are at the exploratory stage, make sure to collect materials that are focused specifically on Arkansas State in addition to materials that will help us situate Arkansas State within its broader regional, national and/or international contexts.

Feb 27

Use Scalar to annotate a piece of media from our group Zotero library or shared Evernote notebook. If you would like to select a new piece of media related to our research, add it to one or both of our shared collections. For directions on how to annotate images, audio/video and plain text with Scalar go here. Title your annotation "Student's Name + Media Annotation," and follow the instructions on the "Assignment" page of our workbook to make sure that it  shows up in the contents of your "Portfolio" and the  "Media Annotation" page.

March 6

Use Voyant and/or Lexos to analyze text(s) from our group Zotero library or shared Evernote notebook. If you would like to select new text(s) related to our research, add it to one or both of our shared collections. After you have explored how to prepare and analyze texts using these tool, save and/or capture the visualizations you generate and embed them in a new page of our workbook titled "Student's Name + Text Analysis." Be sure to provide a narrative interpretation of the results.  Follow the instructions on the "Assignment" page of our workbook to make sure that it  shows up in the contents of your "Portfolio" and the "Text Analysis" page. 

March 13

Use data from our group Zotero library or shared Evernote notebook to make a  map using StoryMap or the Map Widget in Scalar. For directions on how to embed a StoryMap into a Scalar page go here; for direction on how to use Scalar's Map Widget go here. If you would like to use new data related to our research, add the source(s) to one or both of our shared collections.  Build or embed your map in a new page of our workbook titled "Student's Name + Spatial Analysis."  Follow the instructions on the "Assignment" page of our workbook to make sure that it  shows up in the contents of your "Portfolio" and the "Spatial Analysis" page.

March 27

Use data from our group Zotero library or shared Evernote notebook to make network visualizations using Palladio. If you would like to use new data related to our research, add the source(s) to one or both of our shared collections.  Embed your visualizations in a new page of our workbook titled "Student's Name + Visualization." Follow the instructions on the "Assignment" page of our workbook to make sure that it  shows up in the contents of your "Portfolio" page and the "Visualization" page.

Practicum

During the final weeks of the course we will work with Archives and Special Collections to collaboratively develop a digital humanities project on the history of Arkansas State University using Scalar.
