1. Introduction - Mediated Communities Do Not Exist

The ideology of control is an asset that that can have two of the following results: a utopian society or a society aware of the corruptness being imposed.  In other words, a uniform society can only be obtained through manipulation of the masses.  However, this society would not be based off of peace and harmony but instead off of capitalism and illusions.  These illusions originate from the highest form of power, which would be the government in most areas in the world.  The illusion that the government instills in its people is that every individual will benefit off of utilizing new technology, especially social media; however, what is really occurring is that capitalistic desires are the underlying relation with new technology.  Within Guy Debord’s article “Society of the Spectacle,” the ideology of control is incorporated with hegemony to describe a future society that does not question any actions that the ruling class commits.  Debord states that, “Though its existence is everywhere in existence, the bureaucracy must be invisible as a class.  As a result, all social life becomes insane.” (Debord 58)  This statement by Debord is creating an amalgam between different social hierarchies and false unity; the ruling classes are secretly in control of every technological medium, but must pretend to be a part of a mediated community in order to preserve peace.  However, with the ruling class not explicitly exerting their power then chaos occurs within society.  Referring to the different technological mediums, the most efficient method the ruling classes utilize is social media.  These various platforms continuously captivate the minds of not only older generations, but also of newer generations.  The significance of social media among a young demographic resides once again in how information is controlled; if a younger generation is being given information from an older ruling class, then the flow of cybernetics will appear natural and eventually become the norm.
