ASSIGNMENT PROMPT:

This assignment is designed to encourage effective multimedia communication through the collaboration of text and image, and to develop image editing skills using Photoshop.
Select 3 images that evoke the past, present and future. Your choice for the past must be 'historically important' broadly speaking; as long as the image can be defended as historically important, it can be used.
You will then transform the foundational images into a triptych of text-image composites, using the work of artist Barbara Kruger (link is an unofficial fan website) as inspiration for your design. Kruger’s work makes careful use of strategies such as irony, scale, composition and wordplay while critically engaging issues concerning gender, science, race and corporate culture. Your project does not have to focus on these same areas, but you must articulate your own goals for the image you create.
For guidance, consult the Barbara Kruger Graphic Standards Manual.
Think about the relationship between the 3 foundational images you use and how they convey a sense of time; what changes over time? What stays the same? Is your vision of the future something widely shared or deeply personal?

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Choose 3 images evocative of the past, present and future, with the 'past' image defensible as historically important.
2. Study Kruger’s design choices and use her style as creative inspiration.
3. Prepare a 3-paragraph (minimum) Statement of Approach that addresses: the significance of the project (why you chose the images and the subject matter of project); an analysis of how the work critiques broader cultural themes and social practices, with an explanation of the “historical significance” of the foundational 'past' image (engage your own research and the theoretical issues discussed in the course); and your strategies of visual interpretation (the design choices you made and how they transmit meaning).
4. Post the completed Image Assignment and Statement of Approach
5. Include a Works Cited for all sources used in research and production, and insert the foundational images into the page or provide a link(s).
