Welcome

Welcome to Redefining the Past. This site presents a digital history project that is both researched and developed by junior historians at George Mason University. Our group's research focuses on the development of female characters in the original fairy tales and Disney adaptations of three stories - Mulan, Aladdin, and The Little Mermaid - in order to understand how history affects these stories throughout time and culture. How do Disney films differ from their original counterparts? How did the feminist movement in 1990s America have an influence over how female characters were depicted in these stories?
To begin our journey to answer these questions, let's start by looking at the timeline below. The timeline displays significant dates and events such as the first appearance of the addressed fairy tales, movie release dates, and crucial moments in feminist history.
