Purpose of the Archive

The purpose of this archive is to provide access, within the Virtual Harlem Project, to information on significant figures from the Harlem Renaissance. The collection consists of artists, musicians, and poets. Our idea is to allow users to learn about these cultural icons in a laid back environment conducive to the essence of Harlem at that time. Our vision of the archive is for Virtual Harlem users to enter the coffee shop One Mo Cup and be able to listen to the music, view the artwork, and hear the poetry that was representative of the Harlem Renaissance. We believe providing access in this manor, as opposed to having our archive in a library or similar location, will allow for an increased level of exposure and will also let users encounter the cultural memories that defined the Harlem Renaissance. It seemed fitting to place this archive in an unconventional location due to the unconventional nature of Virtual Harlem.

The photos below show the exterior and interior of the location of our archive as it exists within the Virtual Harlem platform.
