Musician Duke Ellington


Duke Ellington was born a year before the start of the 20th century. He is was an American composer,

pianist, and bandleader of jazz orchestras. He started his orchestra in 1923

and led his band into 1974 when he passed away. He has won over a dozen Grammy

Awards. Ellington gained a national profile from his appearances at the Cotton

Club. A few of his best-known songs are “In a Sentimental Mood,” “Take the ‘A’

Train,” and “Caravan.”
