In Act 2, although the actors remain the same, the characters change. So instead of Lafayette the audience is introduced to the cocky Thomas Jefferson. With the help of the fabulous "ensemble", "Jefferson" tells the story of while the war was going on, he was in France, but now he is back to save the country from Hamilton's financial plan. He quickly leaves to meet up with James Madison and George Washington. From here out it becomes a political fight between Jefferson and Hamilton.

Thomas Jefferson is a fascinating character because his levels of sass are incredibly high. As "Thomas Jefferson" sings about coming "home" (and the fact that the "ensemble" assists in praising his return), he constantly repeats how he was partying in France and now he is about to be in charge. This cocky attitude he holds, is the Act 2 version of Lafayette and it makes sense because they are played by the same actor. Although it is a bit comedic to watch the proud Jefferson prance around stage, he also acts as a new challenge to Hamilton. This song is still early on in act 2, so the audience is getting used to the new characters and Jefferson is one of them. From an audience/reader perspective, it can hard to adjust to a new character; however, personality and word wise, Jefferson is so similar to Lafayette that the audience is able to adjust. It's fun, large characters that allows the audience to continue to fall in love with and keep them listening to learn more.
