News travels to Eliza and Alexander that their son has been shot in a duel. The doctor tries to explain that he was bleeding and shot in the side. Maybe in modern day that would not be death, but back then it was. Philip tries to apologize and justify his actions to his father. Eliza steps in as the loving mother trying to save her son. She and Philip count in French, but Philip dies.

If the Hamilton family's life was a bar graph this would be an extremely low point. Alexander has wrapped himself up in his work that he failed his oldest son (who was about Alexander's age at the start of the play) grow up and change the world. However there is a part of him for not firing his gun, but a guilt that comes with it. The question of how a person will be remembered even pertains to the young Philip. Some say that the ultimate pain is losing a child and now Hamilton family must overcome that. People keep going back to even the tragic sad songs because it pulls out the empathetic qualities in humans. All the characters have some quality that make them exciting to connect with, but when they die, it is that pain because they do not get to hear the rest of the words in a story.
