George Washington calls Alexander Hamilton into his office for an important meeting. He tells Alexander that he needs him to draft an address because it is "time" for him to "say goodbye" and that he will plan to resign as President to go back home. News that Jefferson will be running for President frustrates Hamilton. He argues that this is the best time to take control, while Washington calmly explains what he wants to talk about and reassures Hamilton that it is time.

Throughout the show Washington has been there as a fatherly support system for the rambunctious Hamilton, but this is one of the first instances where a family figure in his life leaves him. He is back to being father-less in a time where a figurehead is essential in the game of politics. Washington has formed his legacy, but Hamilton wants him to be a part of his. Humans are not always the best with change, so people can related to trying to justify keeping someone or something. This is done with overlapping lyrics as Hamilton fights to try to negotiate him to stay. His father figure is gone and now it is up to him to keep fighting for Washington.
