Food Waste in France

NGO's

France’s new piece of legislation will have a major impact on existing food banks and charities within the country. Jaques Baillet, head of Banques Alimentaires, a network of food banks, was overwhelmed with the ruling describing it as a positive step in the right direction. At the same time he was quite aware of the necessary changes that will be needed in order to accommodate the influx of food. For one they will need more volunteers and added resources such as refrigerators to store the food (Friej, 2016).

In contrast, Gars’pilleurs a food redistribution organization was cautious of the new law. In a statement made by the action group they alluded to the fact that this law will give a false sense of moral fulfillment. They believe that the law only addresses the tip of the iceberg as it fails to consider food loss at any of the other stages of production or consumption (Chrisafis, 2015). An interesting point is that the implementation of this law has gained international interest as the UN views this as a paradigm to follow with hopes of other nations getting on board (Dvorsky, 2016).
